Welcome to Making Motherhood Manageable
In case you’re not familiar with how this works, this is where you get to know who I am as I share details of my life, the things I like, and explain why my name is spelled weird.
So, if you’re cool with that, Let’s do this!
I’m Joye…that’s Joy with an ‘e’.
I know my name looks unusual. That stroke of creative genius was my mom’s doing! When I asked her why she added the ‘e’, she said, “The day you were born, I was just in an ‘e’ kind of mood.” What? huh?! Adding, she wanted my name to be different. Way to go Mom…nailed it!
Aside from having a name that looks like a typo…
I’m an average mom with a basic set of parenting skills that went through a fiery gauntlet of trials while raising my kids (one with ADHD) and managed to make it to the other side — slightly singed but wiser.
Once the reigning queen of my domain as a stay-at-home-mom of 3 boys, 2 mouser cats, 1 goofy-sweet 110 lb. black lab, 19 laying hens, and a majestic, but very loud, ‘rescue’ peacock on three acres in Texas.
I’d describe myself as a self-proclaimed, fully qualified domestic engineer. By default, I became proficient in the field of ADHD coping skills and chaos management. Along with kid wrangling, homeschooling and being a short-order cook, I somehow managed to simultaneously maintain my femininity and sanity while keeping three boys alive.
After 28 years as a stay-at-home mom…
I’m no longer chasing kids around and telling them what to do. My diaper-changing days, nursing in the Target dressing room, locating misplaced orthodontic retainers, and breaking up fights in the back seat of the car with one very effective, rear-view mirror “mom-stare” have run their course.
It was time for a new adventure.
So, I left the oppressive heat of the South and headed North (way north) with my husband.
Seemed like a good idea at the time as we had no clue what the word “snow load” meant or what it would be like to shovel (literally) tons of snow just to get to our car.
I guess we could have googled it before we moved but instead, we filled a 52′ semi-trailer full of a lifetime of accumulated memories and furniture and put down new roots closer to where I spent my summers as a kid and where our aging parents reside.
Now coastal Maine is where we call home.
Not the kind of coastal where we live “on the water” coastal. This kind of coastal is where, if you go up to the second floor of our house, in the winter, when all the leaves are off the trees and stand on your tiptoes, press your nose against the window and tip your head in just the right way, you’ll see ocean “coastal”.
After getting settled into our “new”/1898 old home, I discovered that the winters here in New England are long (another thing we could have googled) a lot longer than I thought they’d be.
Now, because I consume way too much caffeine to sit still and I wanted to find a way to get out of shoveling snow, I started blogging.
That’s how MAKING MOTHERHOOD MANAGEABLE was born.
It’s my labor of love for a new season in life.
I can barely remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to be a mother. Since I was very young, being a mom was my deepest desire. I wanted nothing more than to be a stay-at-home mom…just like my mom. Of course, I realize some might say that I didn’t aim very high, or that I could have done more with my life. But I personally wouldn’t have made a different life career choice.
Life with children has been an amazing teacher. Motherhood taught me about compassion, patience, selflessness, sacrifice, love and to believe in something greater than myself — Christ Jesus.
Now that all my boys are grown and I see what they have brought to the world, I truly can not think of a higher calling or richer blessing that would have had more meaning.
As moms, we each have a unique life story.
A story that should be shared. Because when we share, we touch the lives of every mom with our experience, knowledge, and wisdom that comes from simply living life. And in that sweet process of sharing, we bless others.
Making Motherhood Manageable is meant to be part of that blessing. This blog is for any mom who’s looking to find useful, practical and common sense information in an edifying and judgment-free setting. So if you’re needing to be encouraged, uplifted or just want a little guidance…you’re in the perfect spot.
“I want you to be comfortable here so…consider this your place! I got your back, girl!”
Now come along and enjoy a little humor, hope, and support while tackling the ups and downs of raising a family.
Here’s what you can expect as my blog grows.
- Kid wrangling tips and tricks. (No, it’s not a lasso and duct tape…I hear Child Protective Services frowns on that!)
- Tried and true direction for successfully navigating the pitfalls of parenting a child that struggles with ADHD — including coping strategies for you and your child.
- Home-school and Public school hacks and helps (yes, I did both).
- Clever methods and organizational how-tos for decluttering, simplifying and containing the accumulated stuff that goes along with having kids.
- Creative and resourceful ways to transform your home into a haven
sanctuaryok, ok…somewhat calmer place to live.
- And as an added bonus, I’ll throw in the occasional family-friendly recipe that helped me keep three boys alive.
Hey, I know you have a dozen other things you could be doing, that’s why I’m thrilled that you’ve taken time to stop by! I’m looking forward to getting to know you and be a part of your motherhood journey.
Thanks for including me in your day!
